Volunteering Information FAQs

Library shelves full of books
What time commitment is expected of me as a Beaverton City Library volunteer?

Most of our volunteer positions require a committment of a two hour shift, once a week, for a minimum of three months.

Do I have to have a set schedule?

Yes! We need to know when to expect volunteer help and be ready for you--so scheduling is very important.

How old do I need to be before I can volunteer?

Applicants who are 14 years of age and up will be considered for volunteer positions. Occasionally, 12 year-olds assist in Children’s Services for the summer reading program.

Does the Library accept Court Ordered Community Service Volunteers?

Unfortunately, the Library is unable to accept court ordered volunteers. The volunteer program at the Library is looking for people who want to make a minimum commitment of three to six months and volunteer two or more hours per week. Most court mandated volunteering does not fit into this structure.

I’m interested in volunteering. What happens next?
  1. Submit a Volunteer application:
    • Pick one up at the General Information or Circulation desk
    • OR
    • Download the Beaverton City Library Volunteer Application (PDF)
    • Return your application to one of our service desks or mail to:

      Beaverton City Library
      Attn: Volunteer Coordinator
      Address: 12375 SW 5th Street
      Beaverton, OR 97005

  2. If there are current openings that match your interests, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you for an interview.
  3. If a suitable position is not available at the time of your interview, your application and interest inventory will be placed in a resource file. As positions become available, you will be contacted.
How long does it take before you can start volunteering?

On average, it takes successful candidates two to four weeks after you submit an application to be placed as a volunteer and begin training.

At the Beaverton City Library we strive to provide a meaningful and enjoyable volunteer experience for those who wish to share their time and skills with us. Thank you for your interest in our program!

How do I get training?

On your first day, you will receive training from your supervisor. Some positions require additional training which will ideally coincide with your regular weekly shift.

Once I become a volunteer, may I use the Library as a reference?

All volunteers who have volunteered for 20+ hours may use the Library as a reference. Please contact Jennifer Johnson, the volunteer coordinator, directly if you would like a letter of reference. Please have potential employers contact Jennifer Johnson at (503) 526-3703.

I’m interested in volunteer evenings or weekends. Is that needed?

Yes! We have volunteers here seven days a week.
